We have heard of videos going viral, but there has been no specific source to find out which videos. Watching and sharing videos is one of the most favored activities that people prefer to engage in online, especially after the advent of video sharing websites like Youtube, Metacafe and DailyMotion. But the question is, how do we get to know which videos are catching the fire to go viral? Well, Bit.ly is trying to answer this question as Ben Parr writes about it on Mashable.
Bit.ly is a URL shortener service, for those of you who don’t know. It is the largest URL shortener of the world and is the default one used on Twitter. With thousands of links being shared on Twitter and other services through Bit.ly, the data is now being put to some good use. Bit.ly has launched a new website that displays the most shared videos “At The Moment,” “Last Day,” and “Last Two Days.” The website can be accessed at http://bitly.tv
It seems like a very good tool for many people who are:
- Video freaks and love to watch new upcoming videos
- Online video producers
- Related to marketing and advertising
- Related to social media and research
Although the service only provides data for up to three days, but there can be a lot more to come by Bit.ly especially with the tremendous amounts of data available to them. Currently, if you click a video to watch on http://bitly.tv you don’t only get the video’s description, but also total number of tweets for that video and the most recent tweets being update on real time. The site also allows you to share the video on Twitter, Facebook or by Email.

A few suggestions that can be incorporated for later releases to make the website more meaningful can be:
- More data than 3 days
- Statistics based on the trends of video consumption volume
- Add video popularity statistics based on other websites like Facebook share
A very useful service by Bit.ly which, we hope, will just get better!
